Jane Blundell

Welcome to my website.

I am a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, Australia's oldest watercolour society, and an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. I am passionate about watercolour, colour, drawing and sketching.

My art inspiration and ideas come largely from the natural world – flowers, trees, rocks, people and landscapes - and I love to work from life. I also enjoy the challenges of abstraction and incorporate abstracted backgrounds and features into many of my paintings.

My work covers a range of media – watercolours, pen and ink, collage, pastels, acrylic, oils and etching – often incorporating several into a single work. Of all of these my favourite is watercolour, which I have been exploring for over 40 years. It is a remarkable medium that allows the qualities of the pigments to become an integral part of the painting, rather than just to add colour.

I am constantly searching for new ways to incorporate watercolours and watercolour techniques into my work, including work with watercolour and mixed media on canvas.

Many of my paintings are available as originals, limited edition prints, fabulous quality Giclée prints or beautiful greeting cards. Please contact me if you want to know more about prices, shipping or commissions.

I love teaching, and in addition to my regular classes and online courses, I am available to run workshops and demonstrations in watercolour, drawing, travel sketching, colour mixing and mixed media.

I hope you enjoy my website, and will return to visit again. I also post many experiments and explorations with colour and materials on my blog. www.janeblundellart.blogspot.com or click on the tab above.

You may also like to see a couple of colour interviews I was asked to do -
  • interview with Jackson's Art here.
  • with Birgit O'Connor from April 2019. This is a long conversation, but we had a lot of fun :-)
  • with Marie Coryell-Martin from April 2020 - she created the Pocket Palette and Artist Tool Kits and we've met in person a few times as well.
  • with John Cogley, CEO of Daniel Smith watercolours, published June 2020. He did a series inside artists' studios through the Covid-19 shut-down. You'll see inside my studio, where I've created this course. We've met a number of times and exchange ideas about paint and pigments.
  • with Rob Sketcherman, for the Urban Sketchers series. I am on the Urban Sketchers faculty and a member of the international education committee. This was published in June 2020. Here I've talked about triads, and suggested an earth triad challenge that will mean more to you after you've completed lesson 8.
  • with Maria Coryell-Martin again in September 2020 when she launched the Demi Palette with my suggested 12-colour Ultimate (mini) Sketching Set.
  • audio interview in February 2021 with James Haydon, as part of his Special Topic podcasts here.
  • video interview for Art n Up with Kristine Ballard and Melony Smirniotis May 2021 here.
