Drawing in Detail
Drawing in Detail is a 6-Lesson course designed to follow on from Travel Sketching. In this course we'll work from photo reference to really delve into each subject in detail, working with graphite pencils, water-soluble graphite pencils and tools, coloured pencils, Inks and watercolour pencils and exploring subjects from detailed rock formations to faces and flowers. Cost is US$180. See more information here
I plan to create a series of individual lessons, probably on Skillshare, covering various aspects of Colour Mixing as well as subjects such as Painting Leaves, Working with Triads and many more. Hopefully I'll make some of these available during the second half of 2023. I spent 2022 working on my own paintings and the first half of 2023 working on the course above :-)
To get going with any of these courses, send me a message through my contact form below - it's helpful if you let me know where you are from too - and I'll let you know the best way to make the payment.

"I stumbled across Jane's Mastering Watercolor course when I was searching the internet for a beginners watercolor palette. I had no idea where to start with WC, what paints to get, what colors or how to use them. Taking Jane's course has been the best thing I have ever done! The course is jammed packed full of information easily understood and it has opened up an understanding of color and watercolor I have never had before. I am almost finished this course and can now view the world around me in palette colors. I have learnt WC techniques that I can use on any number of subjects. Jane's critiques are so informative they add yet another learning dimension. Through Jane's exercises I feel confident to take on any given palette of colors and be able to use it to its full potential. Take this course if you are really serious about Mastering Watercolor."

"When I began my journey into watercolor nine months ago, I found plenty of inspiration, but I soon realized I did not have the solid foundation needed to channel all that creativity into paintings of my own. But that changed when I signed up for Jane Blundell’s Getting Started in Watercolor and Mastering Watercolour tutorials. Jane’s thorough (and fun!) lessons build upon each other in a clear and logical manner, and her invaluable feedback is always given in the generous spirit of helping me become a better artist. Before taking Jane’s classes, I would look at something I wanted to paint and feel frustrated and intimidated, not knowing where to even begin. Now I feel encouraged and confident, knowing I have a skillset that will see me all the way from the selection of my color palette through to a finished painting. I still have a lot to learn—and I hope that never changes—but I could not have asked for a better teacher to get me started. I highly recommend both of these tutorials, and I cannot wait to take more of Jane’s courses!"

"I met Jane on the first day I took the plunge to attend an Urban Sketching Sydney monthly gathering - she sat next to me and I felt so self-conscious that she could see my attempt at sketching. Of course, I needn’t have been worried, as she was so kind, generous and encouraging and gave me some great tips on the value of adding phthalo green to the sketch I was working on. Discovering that day that Jane ran an online ‘Mastering Watercolour’ course, I eagerly signed up to it. ‘Mastering Watercolour’ is a big course, so jammed packed with information, watercolour techniques and inspiration that I will visit the course resources time and time again. I highly recommend this course to anyone who really wants to know about mixing watercolours and using limited palettes - the information is second to none - Jane is the expert. In addition, the large number of techniques incorporated into each lesson, building on previous ones, provides great inspiration to practice while moving through the course and onwards. Throughout, Jane has provided excellent feedback and encouragement, while continually reminding us to have fun, and of course to breath! (I had to laugh as at some points I was holding my breath!) Thanks Jane!"

"In addition to being an inspired artist, Jane Blundell is a wonderful teacher with an encyclopedic knowledge of watercolor. I've taken a number of online painting classes, and Jane's is different - she advises and answers questions. It's like getting to work with her in person! I was concerned at first that this was a PDF based course, without videos. But the coursework is so detailed and full of information, videos are unnecessary. Jane cleverly designed the practice portion of the class into creating real paintings, so it's a lot of fun too."

"I began following Jane’s Blog after seeing her postings in a Facebook art group. She was always very helpful and it was obvious she knew what she was talking about. This was about the same time I ventured into watercolor. I just wanted to add color to my sketches and picked up tips from Jane’s website on what colors to purchase. I purchased a few. My need for color grew but not my knowledge of watercolor. I started collecting pigments without fully realizing how to work with them. I found Jane’s Mastering Watercolor course on her website but could not decide to sign up. Then I saw some of her students posting their work within an art group on Facebook. That was the push I needed. Almost immediately after signing up Jane made some recommendations on the pigments I had purchased.
Mastering Watercolor has given me a greater understanding of color theory. A subject I thought was boring however Jane made it interesting and fun. I was scared of the brush. I felt I was making a mess of my sketches and knew this was due to not knowing the fundamental skills of watercolor. Now I do through taking Jane’s online course. I have taken live workshops. You walk away and forget most of what was presented. With Jane’s course you work at your own pace. She is there to answer any questions via email and provides you with a wealth of information that you can keep to refer back to. She has gentle teaching style and was not flustered when I started to doubt myself. She knew just the right amount of encouragement needed to help move me forward. I have no regrets, well one, I have just finished the course. Jane has recently set up a private Facebook group for students and is posting videos. This is an excellent course for anyone starting out or feeling they are missing something in watercolor painting."

"I started learning watercolor in adult and community college classes that included proficient and advanced students but very few beginners. Most of the demonstrations were way over my head, so it was ‘catch as catch can’, and I felt discouraged, floundering and lost. I found Jane Blundell’s on-line ‘Mastering Watercolor’ class through an article in the Urban Sketching Zine, and I am SO glad I did. Her lessons are so well-organized! The lessons build skills step-by-step with very clear and detailed explanations and several topics are combined in each lesson. Jane is very responsive to questions and makes the on-line ‘conversation’ easy and friendly. Her recommended color palette and extensive color exercises have helped me to understand how to combine colors and get harmonious & predictable results. My confidence and pleasure in painting have increased so much! Now that I have the basics, I can enjoy my local in-person classes. Painting is fun, as it should be! I highly recommend ‘Mastering Watercolor’ and look forward to taking more of Jane’s on-line classes in future!"

"Thank you for your time and everything that you taught me. I enjoyed learning about color mixing and how to use different triads; a fantastic foundation for me. While taking lessons with you, I ventured out and did a few paintings on my own where I had to figure out which colors to mix; I could not do that prior to these lessons. The objectives of your mastering watercolors classes have been met. I am thrilled and happy to say I feel so much more confident sitting down and painting. I look forward to many more years of mastering watercolor!"
